Preparing for Your First Colonoscopy: What to Expect

Colonoscopy hand in glove medical device

If you've been referred for a colonoscopy, it's completely normal to feel a little uncertain about what to expect.

Understanding the process can help reduce anxiety and ensure you're well prepared for your appointment.

What is a colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a procedure that allows a specialist to examine the inside of the large bowel using a flexible camera.

It is commonly performed to investigate symptoms such as:

  • Changes in bowel habits

  • Rectal bleeding

  • Persistent abdominal pain

  • Chronic diarrhoea

  • Positive bowel screening tests

It also plays an important role in bowel cancer prevention by identifying and removing polyps before they become cancerous.

How do you prepare?

Your healthcare team will provide detailed preparation instructions before your procedure.

Preparation generally includes:

  • Following a low-fibre diet for several days

  • Drinking bowel preparation medication

  • Staying hydrated

  • Arranging someone to drive you home afterwards

Following the preparation instructions carefully helps ensure the bowel is clean, allowing the specialist to obtain the clearest possible view.

Is the procedure painful?

Most colonoscopies are performed with sedation, meaning patients are comfortable throughout the procedure and remember very little afterwards.

The procedure itself is usually completed within 30 to 60 minutes, although you should allow additional time for admission and recovery.
