Stool sample collection step-by-step

Feeling nervous about the stool sample you have been asked to do?

Here’s an easy step-by-step.

Step 1

Write your details on both sample containers.

You will need to take 2 samples of the same stool, on the same day, at the same time.

Step 2

Do a wee first if you need and flush the toilet.

Fill your toilet with toilet paper, enough so that your stool does not touch the water, but not too much that you will not be able to flush it all.

Step 3

Scoop or scrape the top of your stool with the lid, up to half the scoop.

Do this with both jars and screw the lid back on as soon as possibly.

Step 4

If your stool is loose or watery, use a disposable container and tip your stool directly in the sample containers.

Step 5

Make sure both containers are properly closed and place them in the specimen bag provided. Seal it shut and drop it all off at your nearest pathology place.

If you cannot drop it straight away, keep in the fridge, never in the freezer, and drop it all as soon as you can.
